Two medical specialists agreed that moringa oleifera is a plant with nutritional and medicinal properties that can contribute to improve health; however, they point out that as a curative medicine, studies are needed to determine its efficiency.
Carlos Manuel Montero Brens, a pediatrician and nutritionist, and Wilfredo Mañón Rossi, a geneticist and naturopathic doctor, warned that moringa is very good as a food with high protein, healthy fats and vitamins, but as a curative medicine, studies are still needed to determine the proportion that should be taken to cure an ailment without exceeding the dose.

"From the nutritional point of view, from that tree (moringa or liberty) can serve its leaves, stem, roots and seeds, which have a number of components that in the case of the leaves have been widely used in pediatrics for its great nutritional value protein," said the pediatrician nutritionist.

Dr. Montero Brens, interviewed on the television program directed by Pablo McKinney "De la semana" and who is a former dean of the School of Medicine of the Universidad Iberoamericana (Unibe), stated that moringa oleifera has been studied by experts in agronomy, botanists, pharmacists, chemists, biologists and by medical professionals, whether pediatrics, internal medicine, oncology specialists, who have determined that it is a good source of nutrition.

He expressed his hope that in a few years studies can be completed to determine the exact doses of moringa needed to treat an ailment, because consumption by eye can have beneficial effects, but abusive use of the plant can complicate health situations.

Take it with care
For Mañón Rossi it is not true that moringa can cure 200 diseases, but in his opinion it is very good for about five ailments, due to its properties.

"It is hypoglycemic, that is: it lowers sugar." However, he warned that people who are on medication "cannot stop taking it because of moringa or freedom, because diabetes is a very difficult and uncomfortable condition, and it is necessary to control it because it can cause hypoglycemia, a drop in blood sugar that is as bad as when it goes up to a million.

He added that moringa "is also good for anemia because of the large amount of iron it contains. It is enough for iron deficiency anemia to be really cured".

Mañón Rossi reported that moringa oleifera was introduced to the country at the end of the 17th century when it was mainly used for the construction of palisades with live poles, but studies have shown that it has nutritional and medicinal properties.
